The JCU defense built a wall around its own goal against Mount Union in recording its second shutout of 2008
Box Score
John Carroll got the best of both worlds as it regained its scoring touch and rediscovered its defensive mindset as the Blue Streaks defeated Mount Union College, 4-0 Wednesday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up at Don Shula Stadium.
Senior Louis Kastelic started off the scoring attack only eight minutes into the game. Kastelic took a pass from sophomore Joe Ciacchi and swiftly put it just out of the reach of Purple Raider goalkeeper Bobby Petras.
Although the one goal would be all JCU needed to win the game, junior Jeff Kosek provided all the insurance the Blue Streaks needed by scoring two goals of his own.
His first, coming at the 34:05 mark, followed good footwork and a solid pass up the left side into the box from junior Ryan Ricart. Before Kosek could boot it into the goal, junior Matt Collins also helped out, putting a short touch on the ball to land it right in front of Kosek's feet.
Kastelic assisted on Kosek's second goal, which came during the second half after Kastelic placed a corner kick right inside the box.
But Kosek and Kastelic would not be the only ones to find the back of the net. Freshman Corey Rider, who is the only Blue Streak to play in all ten games and not start, scored his second goal of the season. With six seconds remaining, Rider easily made the final goal and last shot of the game after Steve Rock threaded a through ball past the Mount Union defense.
Mount Union and John Carroll took 14 shots a piece. Blue Streak junior goalkeeper Matt DeMarchi recorded eight saves, while Petras had five. It was DeMarchi's second shutout of 2008 and his first since a 3-0 win over Anderson on September 6.
With the win, JCU climbs back over .500, standing at 5-4-1 overall, 1-1 in the OAC. Mount Union falls to 5-6-1 overall, 0-2 in the OAC
